The good news is: I'm going to be in town and in Wi-Fi range all this weekend! Serious rambling around the Internet and especially around the blogosphere will ensue. Leave me your links when you comment, and I'll be sure to return the visit and follow! :)
This week's featured FF blogger is: Lisa @ Read. Breathe. Relax.
(Sounds like great summertime advice to me!)
This week's question is:
Let's step away from besties...What is the worst book that you've ever read and actually finished?
My answer: Wow, that's a tough one! I don't have a very high level of tolerance when it comes to reading books I'm not enjoying-- there are just too many great books waiting to be read out there. Luckily I have a handy and much-dreaded Goodreads shelf: wish-i-hadn't-read ready to help me out on occasions like this. Scanning the list, I'm going to have to go with Feed by MT Anderson. It's a YA book, a futuristic sci-fi involving hyper-advanced technology and a conspiracy. The plot itself had plenty of merit... it was the horrible writing style which had me beating my head against my desk as I attempted to finish it. It's purposely intended to echo the random, chaotic thoughts of the teen protagonist, complete with crazy run-on sentences and tiny, fragmented ones. The grammer stickler in me nearly had a tiny little heart attack on every page. I know a lot of people really enjoyed that book, but it wasn't at all for me.
Usually, my biggest peeves with books are obviously contrived love triangles and annoying writing styles. A close runner-up for this answer, I will add, was Fallen by Lauren Kate. Again, I know it's popular and everyone says the series gets better... but that book and I really didn't click. What about you guys-- what's the worst book you've ever read?
I hope you all have a great weekend and a fantastic time blog hopping!
Old follower hopping through :)
ReplyDeleteI totally know what you mean about weird writing styles where the authors are trying to be new and creative but the finished product is just a pain to read-- I read and reviewed the book You by Charles Benoit which was written completely in second-person-- it was really strange-- and for other reasons, I just was not a fan...
You can see my FF post for this week at the link below-- have a great weekend!

I haven't read either of those books, although I do have Fallen on my TBR. Not sure I'd be able to make it through Feed, the writing would probably drive me crazy. =)

The Haunting of Orchid Forsythia
Don't recognize Feed. Guess I'm lucky about that.
ReplyDeleteI have read Fallen and I did like the other books in the series better. I can see some problems with it. The one thing that always bothered me in the book was Daniel flipping her off the first time he saw her. I don't care how unexpected it is, you don't flip off the love of centuries, do you?
Anyway, old follower.

Hi, hon - already a follower, but sharing the Friday love anyway. I don't do too many negative reviews (I'd rather forget the book than write about it!) but I love your "wish-i-hadn-t-read" shelf!

New follower. I am with you 150% on the love triangles! Can't stand them myself. My Friday Follow is up at Coffee Table Reviews
ReplyDeleteOh, I kind of wanted to read Feed. Guess I'll just have to see for myself if I like it. Agree with you about Fallen, though. I didn't like that book at all.
ReplyDeleteNew follower! :)

Some of my least favorite books: Watership Down, Angel by James Patterson (it compleatly ruined the series... as well as The Final Warning), Matched, and The Lovely Bones. The Lovely Bones had an interesting idea and was well written, but I found it too freaky and graphic to be enjoyable... I barricaded all my windows and doors for weeks after reading that book...
ReplyDelete~Liz
@Liz-- Aw, I loved Watership Down! But the Final Warning was indeed one of the most painful train wrecks I've ever read... never read the Lovely Bones, but it doesn't look like my kind of thing. See you, Liz!
ReplyDelete@Alyssa-- I didn't mean to turn anyone off to reading Feed-- it just really wasn't my thing. I hope very much that you enjoy it more than I did! :)
Never heard of this one, have a happy Friday!

That is a great idea to have a good reads shelf for that. I may have to be a copycat. New Follower: hope you will come by!

I can see how that would get annoying I hate reading bad grammer, even if it is intentional, in a book, it bugs me! Have a great weekend!

Hopping through. Too bad you didn't like Feed. I'm not sure I would either.
ReplyDeleteMy Hop
Hi! Stopping by on the hop!
ReplyDeleteFallen is on my TBR pile and so far I haven't seen happy reviews on it. I'm really put off by love triangles as well. Its always the nice guy that gets hurt.
Old follower! :)
