Follow Friday (#32)

Happy Friday to everyone stopping by from Follow Friday (hosted by the fabulous Parajunkee and the equally fabulous Alison of Alison Can Read).  For those who don't know, I'm Kat-- reviewer of mostly fantasy, historical, and scifi-esque fiction (often I do venture into other genres, though).  If you leave your blog's link when you comment, whether old follower or new, I'll be sure to visit or follow you back-- I'm generally very good about that.  If you want to follow me, you can do via email subscription, RSS, or GFC.  ;)

This week's FF question is:

What writing device or trick most irritates you when reading a book?

My answer: Ooh, I like this question.  I won't deny that I kinda enjoy dissecting why I didn't like a book in my reviews, if I didn't enjoy it.  One of my biggest pet peeves is what a lot of people call INSTA-LOVE.
INSTA-LOVE (n)-- When the hero and heroine of a novel, typically a young adult paranormal romance although the effect manifests to an extent in all genres, seem to instantly fall not just in lust, but in true, eternal wuv with one another upon first sight.  Think the classic Romeo & Juliet meeting scene, but without the classy class-iness

Like our featured blogger, I also don't like sudden point-of-view changes within a chapter and agree that excessive dialect can be annoying.  As a Southerner (US), I really dislike it when an author who isn't from the South tries to imitate our dialect and does so incorrectly.  For example, I like the Beautiful Creatures series, but they are occasionally somewhat guilty of this.

ANYWAY, all writing pet-peeves aside,

I wish ya'll all happy following and a great weekend filled with much reading,

  1. I'm so glad that Charlaine Harris doesn't feel the need to 'write' a Southern accent, or the Sookie Stackhouse novels would be ruined for me. I always imagine it in my head though, I love the Louisiana accent =) But reading it... I'm not sure I would understand it!
Thanks for commenting on my FF!

  2. @Rinn-- Very true! I'm not a huge fan of the Sookie Stackhouses, but if I remember, she does just fine with the dialect. Sometimes authors can get the accent right, but it's so rare that sometimes it's better when they don't try at all. All the regional variations make things difficult, like with UK accents, I guess.

Louisiana is crazy unique-- not sure I would understand it, either. Thanks for visiting back. :)

  3. I feel the same way about insta-love. I can't even begin to count the number of books I have read wherein the boy and girl are head over heels in love by the third chapter!

  5. OMG it is so funny that we are all talking about Sookie Stackhouse. I cannot stand her best friend in the show because she has the fakest accent ever!!! And I hate when accents are written into the text, they are so distracting!

  8. Instalove isn't a favorite of mine either. I can't say it is at the top of my list, but I don't care for it. I like seeing two characters get to know each other, and then fall in love. It is very sweet that way.

  9. I agree, I lived most my adult life in Texas, and sure hate when I read a book that has a person from there, or is there, and they over do the accents, or phrases, most of the time, its more like someone from Oklahoma or something. lol, yeah, it can get to ya for sure.

  10. Hi!
I don't like POVs to change within the same chapter, it gets to be confusing.

  12. insta-love is a winner today. I agree though it can be annoying sometimes. Especially when the girl is obsessive.

  13. Completely agree on the insta-love! I also don't really like insta-lust, I find lust driven books less interesting in general, unless it's specifically a genre where that is normal ;-)
