Top Ten Books I Resolve to Read in 2013

This week's Top Ten Tuesday theme (meme hosted by the bloggers of The Broke and Bookish): books which we're determined to read in 2013.  My New Year's reading resolution: I'm hellbent on reading some classics.  For all the many, many books I read, very few are considered classics and I definitely want to change that, being a freshman English major and all.  So much that I'm devising a new weekly (or bi-weekly) blog feature with reviews of the classics I read.  Anyway, here are some of the classics at the top of my list:

1.
I most likely won't get to the very thick Anna Karenina before the movie leaves theaters, but maybe in time for its Red Box release.

2.
This is another thick one, but I generally love Arthurian books, so hopefully it will be enjoyable.

3.
I want to read a few more Jane Austen books this year-- Sense and Sensibility is one I started, but never finished yet.

4.
1984 is like the dystopia classic.

5.
Then Brave New World is a close second-- another famous dystopia.

6.
It's going to be a modern translation of The Canterbury Tales for me, yep.  My Middle English is a bit rough.

7.
Othello and other works by the Bard.  The only Shakespeare I've read are Hamlet, The Tempest, and Twelfth Night.

8.
I've still never read the original Alice!

9.
Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson

10.
Rebecca is said to be excellent and suspenseful, yet slow-paced.

So what books have you resolved to read in 2013?  And what's your favorite classic-- any I should add to my list??  Leave the links to your Top Tens and I'll visit back.

  1. Good for you in tackling the classics! I shy away from them...high school did me in (luckily the teachers didn't diminish my love of reading)! Good luck with them, I've heard great things!

Thanks for stopping by my blog!

  2. Anna Karenina is one of my all-time favorites.

Pride and Prejudice is excellent. I read The Canterbury Tales in Old English and it was an adventure, but they are funny.

Othello is incredible. It might be my favorite Shakespearean play.

I read Treasure Island this year. It's enjoyable.

    Rebecca is incredible. It's beautifully-written.

Happy New Years and happy reading!

  3. I need to get around to reading more classics this year too! (Especially since I'm in college trying to become an English teacher..woops). The only book that I read on your list is 1984 and it was pretty fantastic. Mind blown at the end, seriously.

  5. @Amanda-- I'm an English Education major, too-- that's one of the reasons why I decided I need to read the classics. 1984 is one I'm very excited to read. Good luck with becoming an English teacher! :)

@Danica Page-- I haven't read much Shakespeare, but Hamlet is (predictably) my favorite so far. Can't wait to read Othello now!

    Thanks for visiting!

  6. AHHHH Classics. I have a love-hate relationship with them. Mostly I love to hate them. However, this year I challenged myself to read 3-5 classics, one being a Jane Austen novel. Good luck!!

  7. I'm trying to read more classics this year as well. I don't know how well that's going to go, but I will try. I especially want to read Anna Karenina, 1984 (yes, because it's THE dystopia), and Brave New World.

I read some of the Canterbury Tales and enjoyed what I saw. I also read Othello in school and really liked it, even though I'm not really a fan of his other works (*gasp*). Enjoy! :)

  8. I've always wanted to read Rebecca too! Good luck with Anna K - that is pretty much the scariest book ever to me :)

Great list, and 1984 is definitely a dystopian classic - I enjoyed it far more than I thought I would!

  9. Anna Karenina is definitely on my list for this year (it was on last year's too, but we won't talk about that!) And 1984 is a good one for everyone, I think. Happy Reading!
