Friday Following & Hopping (#23)

Happy Friday! Hello to everyone stopping by my blog via Follow Friday (hosted by paranormal queen Parajunkee).  I'd also like to welcome any of my old followers just dropping in to say hi. :)  Thanks for visiting, and don't forget to leave me your blog links so I can follow you back!

This week's featured blogger over at FF is:
Ninja Girl from Ninja Girl Reads!

And the question is:

Can you tell us FIVE quirky habits or things about you? We all have them...

My answer:

You're kidding-- only five?!  Well, I'll do my best to whittle all my odd little habits down to a short list. ;)

1.  Parajunkee says she loves the smell of tires-- I confess to being addicted to the smell of books... and wood shavings.  It's why I can never "get into" e-books the way I can physical books... they just don't have that off-the-printing-press aroma!  Wood shavings because they remind me of the stable, and also of freshly-carved bookshelves (my dad's a carpenter, good figure).

2.  I completely can't stand odd numbers.  Just an aspect of my weirdo OCD, but everything really must be even.  I can't, for example, eat an odd number of bites or read an odd number of pages.

3. Quirky (read certifiable) places and times where and when I've been known to read:
-- While running on the treadmill at full speed
-- While blow-drying my hair
-- While my mother shops (I used to tag along whenever she went to the mall and walk around with a book stuck in my nose, bumping into kiosks and racks of clothing)
-- While waiting for computer pages to load (I had dial-up until about a year ago... 'nough said!)
--I've never tried this myself, but I have a friend who swears she's taught herself to read while driving!

4. I'm developing an unfortunate (though admittedly entertaining) addiction to Youtube parodies and videos (especially A Very Potter Musical and the Lost Parodies).  I feel like such a member of Generation Z when I go on about anything Youtube... we are all so hooked on technology!  Seriously though, A Very Potter Musical is worth getting addicted to!

5. Something else I'm addicted to... the Traveler IQ Challenge at travelpod.com!  Not to brag, but I can now beat every version of this game (yep, I'm pretty sure that qualifies as bragging).  Still, it's not an easy feat by any means!

ANYWAY, thanks so much for stopping by and wading through my weirdness!  I hope you all have a fantastic weekend, and wish you happy reading!

I have tried reading while running on the treadmill at full speed and it was definitely not easy.

Hopping through. Reading while driving sounds very stupid, but I do read at stoplights.

Very impressive that you can read while running on the treadmill. I just only recently mastered walking and reading on the treadmill. Great post!!

I hate odd numbers too although it manifests in different ways for me. I don't count my number of bites but I prefer an even volume number for the Tv or radio for example.

Thanks for the tip bout A Very Potter Musical btw, I'm going to watch it now. I've developed a re-obsession for all things Harry Potter now since I watch this video.

I love the smell of books too, that is also why I'm not keen on kindles etc.

Oh, yes. I remember dial-up. My brother always joked about making a sandwich while he waited. And I love holding books in my hand. It just has a good feel to it. New follower here! Here's my FF: http://thoughtsatoneinthemorning.blogspot.com/2011/05/book-blogger-hop-1-follow-friday-4-in.html

I read A LOT while computer pages load -- mostly at work. I can't stand wasting all that time!!

@Bookworm1858-- My mom tells me that when I was younger, I would actually get really angry if she had the TV on an odd volume. It was a while before she convinced me to tell her what was wrong, so I definitely get where you're coming from!

@Moonlight Gleam- lol, this was my immediate response when she told me she could read while driving: ('WHAT? Do you WANT to die?') but hopefully she's learned to confine her reading to stoplights like all these other addicts. :)

Thanks for the follow!
I love the smell of books, especially older books. I love my kindle, but it isn't the same, is it?
Thanks for the follow! Random-topic-talking really does earn a few stares, doesn't it? My family and friends think I'm insane. ;) Less than 100 pages of Scorpia Rising left, so it will be up soon!
Have a great weekend!

Hi!!
I saw on your about me descrip. that you love dystopian. I'm looking for a really good one at the moment. I've read a couple (The Uglies series for example) and just didn't love the endings. I'm a sucker for a good/happy ending, not that it has to be all sunshine and blue skies, but I want it to END, you know? Do you have any recs?
Thanks for following, and I'm off now to follow you!

This is a fun question. I’m learning so much about everybody and I don’t think most of us are as quirky as we think we are.

My quirks seem normal enough. As I wrote them I woke up to the fact a lot of my quirks create inner conflicts. I’ve got a lot to think about!

I agree. Odd numbers are completely useless :)

I used to read when I blow dry my hair too but some of the water droplets would alwasys blow onto the pages so i've stopped doing it. I sometimes still do it when I read library books though.

LOL, I love Youtube parodies. Especially Harry Potter and Twilight! And that sure was some interesting places to read!

Happy Friday Kat! I love the smell of wood shavings, nothing like walking into a stable and getting lost in that smell:) A lot of people think barns are smelly, but the barn I kept my horse at never reeked, it always smelled like fresh shavings and I loved it:) They should make wood-shaving scented candles:)

Hey again Kat!
Thanks so much for the recs for dystopian. I'll be sure to check them out :)

Hey, I LOVE your "quirks"! There's just one thing....I myself prefer odd numbers! As a matter of fact, my favorite ones are "3" and "5"! Now, this has nothing to do with quantities, really. I simply like the visual shapes of these numbers. They have circles in them, and I just LOVE anything circular! (Like mandalas, for example!)

Of all the "quirks" you mentioned, my favorite ones, which I share with you, are the enjoyment of the smell of books, and the inability to get into e-books. I can't stand them, by the way. I don't plan on EVER owning a Kindle, or a Nook, or any other e-reader!

Interesting post! :)

Kat said...

@Maria-- I have a friend who feels the same way about odd numbers that I do with even ones... now I guess I have two who do! It is a very funny quirk. :) I like mandalas, too... I could get lost in one all day.

I understand perfectly what you mean about e-books... I've tried and tried to read them, and I'm near the point of admitting I just can't. It's too much like being on the computer, and I constantly 'jump' around while I'm surfing the web. Have a great weekend! :)

Hi, again, Kat!

Well, actually....I have been participating in a reading challenge for a while now, and we're supposed to read at least 12 books this year. I started in February, so I want to read two instead of one this month,so that I will then have an even 12! I think my thing with numbers is just visual. I like any numbers with circles in them, my favorites being the ones I mentioned above. Although, for some reason, I do like the number 4...I like the triangle shape in it. Lol.

As for e-books, I sure do hope they don't push out the REAL books!! I can read on the computer if it's a short selection. I start to balk when I see more than one page. But an entire book! I can't stand the thought of scrolling and scrolling endlessly on an e-reader, instead of turning the pages of a REAL book!!!! UGH. Besides, I love to hug my books, and run my hands lovingly over their covers!

Come by and check out my most recent post, about another FAB giveaway -- YA books only!!!!

You have a GREAT weekend, too!! :)

Hello!
haha! I love the smell of books also! I treat my books as if they were my children so I could never replace them with a kindle.
